YORUBA CULTURE-(ASA
YORUBA)
Like every other ethnic and society with history, Yoruba
people south west Nigeria also have their own beautiful culture which the
yoruba’s had spread all over the word.
As we all know that culture is the total way of life of a
person, either local or international, we all have a particular culture we are
following and respected so much.
Aspect of culture include the following
1. clothing/dressing
2. greeting
3. eating
4. marriage/wedding ceremony
5. naming ceremony
6. festivals
Etc
have countless cultures, total ways of a Yoruba
culture can be found in their culture.
I don’t know about your tribe, but Yoruba believe so much in
its culture.
The culture of Yoruba that we are going to look at today is
the greeting culture(asa ikini)
GREETING IN YORUBA-(ASA IKINI)
Greeting is a very significant aspect of Yoruba culture,
Yoruba place greeting in a very valuable positiong among other cultures.
Greeting is not limited to exchanging pleasantries in Yoruba
culture, it means more than that. It shows how much a wife respect the husband,
how well the children also respect their parents.
Proper greetings and pleasantries gesture has been installed
in the yorubas right from infancy. To the extent that these has become a
notable aspect of a tipical Yoruba person.
There is different greetings for different occasions, and
different greetings for different time of the day.
The greetings can be break down into the following
categories:
1. early morning
2. afternoon
3. night
4. ceremonial greetings
5. congratulatory greetings
6. sympathizing greets
7. friendships etc
Before I end let us
look at some greetings in Yoruba.
Early morning greeting:
Kaaro Oojire bi?
E ku ojumo
E ku idaji
E kaaro
E ku iyaleta
E ku ojumomo etc
Afternoon greetings
E kaasan
E ku irole
Night greetings
E kale
E ku asale
Any time greetings
E ku asiko yi o
E ku deede iwoyi
